01. ~ Why did you join this site?

I needed a gallery where I could post my artwork - Photobucket wasn't quite enough, though I could upload my decobooklets and such there and I still use it to store pictures of pony customs and other things that I post to the discussion forums.

Besides, I love to see other people's art and it's great to be able to give and receive feedback, as well as gather all the favourites in one place. One thing I particularly like in DA is that there are both professionals and 'hobby artists' here, beginners as well as advanced artists.


02. ~ What does your username have to do with you?

Haawan is a second nickname that I use around the Internet. I really prefer using Griffin, which is a nick I started to use in decos around... 2001? I've always loved fantasy and mythological creatures, and around that time I spotted all the beautiful gryphon/griffin artwork in Magic: the Gathering playing cards. : D Too bad a usernime like that is almost always taken on the English speaking sites, so I need to use Haawan, which was originally a really bad joke between me and my friend. It's based on the LOTR character Arwen and the Finnish language, quite hard to explain in English but all you Finnish speakers might perhaps see the connection and laugh at me now. Well, at least it's original.


03. ~ What is your current icon of?

In fact that is the icon I've had ever since I joined DA Should perhaps change it some day. It's a piece of a rain themed decobook I made years ago, the letters are from the word sade, 'rain'.


04. ~ How many watchers do you have and how many people are you currently watching?

I'm watching 61 people, and I have 41 watchers. I try to keep the number of people I'm watching pretty low to avoid a terrible flood of deviations. Sometimes I go through my favourites gallery and check if those artists have submitted anything new and interesting, in case I don't watch them. I usually watch people only if I really want to see everything (or nearly everything) they submit in their galleries. There are so many great artists here that I could watch, but I want to be able to concentrate on the deviations that show in my messages.

Auugh, this is too difficult! I'd want to say everyone I'm watching. But I'll try to pick three artists I really admire and find inspiring:

Some of these I know better, some I have only met once, but 'know' via the deco community since several years. ^-^

09. ~ Do you comment, fave, or both?

I do both, though I know I should be commenting much frequently than I do. I also appreciate receiving comments very much, especially thoughtful comments, with or without critique. It's always nice to hear why people like or dislike something and what emotions the pieces of art evoke, or what they remind the viewer of.


10. ~ What do you typically post on deviantart?

Decos and deco entries and My Little Pony customs. I rarely make other art nowadays, I simply have no time. Almost everything I draw ends up in one deco or another, I don't remember when was the last time I drew something just for myself. O-o But I don't mind, deco swapping is a great stress reliever and I get to admire fellow swappers' art as well as letting other people see what I've done. Most of the stuff I do doesn't look anything like the real life version when scanned or photographed. :/ _{Or maybe I should just learn to use the scanner and the camera.}

As far as themes go, the majority of my deviations are animal related. Definitely my favourite thing to draw and paint.


11. ~ Do you participate in clubs or contests here on DA?

I'm a member in a couple of clubs. I'll link them in the end of this journal, as usual. I haven't participated on any contests yet, but perhaps some day.


12. ~ What is your most popular deviation?

Vampire Princess Miyu has the most comments and faves, but Unicorn Tattoo Design has the most views.


13. ~ What's your favorite submission in your favorites gallery?

Another impossible question! My favourites gallery is full of incredible art... But again if naming pieces that have had a huge impact on me, one of them would be Dance of Seasons by =windfalcon.

14. ~ What are the things you wish you could draw better?

Anatomy on the whole, especially human anatomy. Hands, feet, postures... Of course the anatomy of various animals, too. Also different types of fabric and their textures and folding are something I'm not good at.


15. ~ Are you a subscriber?

Nope, I just have better use for my money though I wouldn't mind if someone would give me a subscription as a gift. :'D


16. ~ How many hours a day do you spend on DA?

Umm, 15 minutes a day? It really depends, I usually check the new messages and deviations every day once or twice, and perhaps check if something interesting on the front page catches my eye. Sometimes I spend hours going through a category or searching for art related to a specific theme, but not very often.


17. ~ Are you a fast, slow, or medium typer?

Medium I guess. And I make typos all the time but I tend to proofread my text quite carefully before submitting.


18. ~ What is your favorite emoticon?

Must say even though I don't think I can use it very often, heh. And is so cute!


20. ~ What is the most annoying thing people ask you?

Umm, I don't think I get asked annoying questions. At least can't think of anything at the moment.


21. ~ What is the most annoying comment you get?

Don't know about 'annoying', but sometimes I get comments like "" on my ponies, for example. It's not actually annoying but I'm not always sure what the person means with that. Maybe it's just that they're not used to MLP customs and they find it funny (in a positive sense probably) but it'd be easier to understand verbal comments.


22. ~ What inspires you?

Wildlife and nature mostly, different colours and colour combinations I spot in everyday life, sometimes music. And, of course, other people's art.


23. ~ Do you use any traditional media?

Haha, in my case a better question would be "Do you use any digital media?" I prefer traditional media, and with decos and ponies that's pretty much the only option anyway. (Well, of course it is possible to use printed art on decos but in that case too you'd probably put something else in the entry as well, thus making it mixed media...)

Watercolour is definitely my favourite medium, and inks too. For ponies I use acrylic paints, but if I try to paint something on canvas with them... phew. We just don't understand each other. A relatively recent acquaintance of mine are Copic Markers. I really like them, but haven't had much practice in making complete drawings with them yet. I usually combine them with watercolours etc.

I've tried digital colouring/painting and would do more if I had the tools, GIMP + mouse are not the best equipment for that. Yet I will always love the traditional art more. It's something that can be touched and felt, at least in theory. Digital art only exists on the screen, and a print is but a replica of it. But of course I admire people who can create incredible digital paintings, I know it's not easy even though you have the ctrl+Z option.


24. ~ Do you associate people online with their icons?

Sometimes, yes. It depends on how well I know them and if they tend to change their icons, avatars, signatures etc. often.


25. ~ Have you ever suggested a Daily Deviation?

Haven't had the courage : D And I wasn't exactly sure how to do that either, until someone explained it a while ago.


26. ~ Everyone has considered leaving DA once or twice. Have you? Why?

In fact, I haven't. O-o Maybe it's just because I don't participate in the forum discussions and such, I'm not aware of most of the drama around. And as I'm not very popular, I don't have the problems that it sometimes brings. I'm quite happy living in my little box here.
